Transport for London has said its new Piccadilly line train will "fundamentally change the experience of travelling" on the line once it enters into service. The upgrades include air-conditioning, onboard CCTV, walk-through carriages and 10% increased capacity.
The new trains also consume 20% less energy and is more accessible. TFL worked alongside Siemens Mobility Ltd to create these "state-of-the-art" trains, which were featured at InnoTrans - the leading international exhibition for transport technology, which takes place every two years in Berlin. Andy Lord, London's Transport Commissioner, said: "Journeys will be more accessible, safer and faster, and the experience for our customers will be transformed." He also added that the new trains will "become one of the first things an international visitor will experience when they come to London".
Aglaja Schneider, joint CEO of Siemens Mobility, said: "I'm incredibly proud to see the new Piccadilly line train exhibited at InnoTrans." "it's fantastic to see how far the project has come and to share that progress with the wider rail industry." he added. The 94 new trains will replace the 86 existing ones, with TfL saying the upgrade will make the service faster and more reliable. The Piccadilly line accounts for 10% of all Tube journeys in London.
